Bheda Farm

Reaching Chitlang and Markhu from Kathmandu?
There are two major ways to reach Markhu and Chitlang: Hiking and Driving. If you want to explore the surroundings and nature then hiking is definitely a good option. However, if you don’t want to walk and travel in luxury then hiring a jeep to Markhu and Chitlang is the perfect option you need to opt for.
Kathmandu to Markhu and Chitlang is approx 2.5 hours drive from Kathmandu. The total distance is around only 27 KM via Chandragiri Road and 55 KM via Dakshinkali road to Chitlang. Public vehicles are also available from Balkhu for Markhu which is not too reliable.
Option One: Hiking
If you have two full days and want to enjoy the walk then this option is definitely a perfect one for you. The hike starts from Chandragiri Cable Car base and goes under the cable car until you reach Bhanjyang. You can take a rest and enjoy lunch here and start a downward hike towards Chitlang.
If you plan to stay in Chitlang then that’s fine, however, you need to hike for another hour to reach Markhu. One the way, you can enjoy the old Newari settlement along with Bheda Farm before reaching Markhu. The total hike takes approx 4-5 hours for average hikers.
Option Two: Public Vehicle
If you are interested in this travel option then you need to reach Balkhu first there are 2 daily vehicles that leave from Balkhu to Markhu. These vehicles often get packed by locals and also the timing is also not fixed so we don’t recommend this option for travelers. You will be taken via a route of Balkhu – Chovar – Pharping – Kulekhani Dam, Markhu, and Chitlang. Kindly be informed that you need to travel extra hours to reach Chitlang from Markhu.
Option Three: Private Vehicle
If you are in a small group and want to travel in comfort, then, hiring a jeep is an ideal option. A Jeep can accommodate up to 8 people and 3 in a car. To travel Markhu and Chitlang via private vehicle, there are two major routes.
- Kathmandu – Chandragiri – Chitlang – Markhu
- Kathmandu – Dakshinkali – Markhu – Chitlang
If you are planning to stay in Chitlang then traveling via the Chandragiri route is recommended which is only 27 KM and if you are looking for Markhu then the Dakshinkali route is highly recommended which is approx 45 KM.
