You can hike nearby the lake in the green hill pine and juniper forest in the morning time which is the home of 20 different mammals, 214 species of birds. Rara is rich in Flora and Fauna, it has more than 500 kinds of flowers along with Snow Trout fish found in the lake of Rara.

Rara National Park is the smallest national park of Nepal however it is of the best habitat of popular Red Panda, Leopard Cat, Wild Boar, Musk Deer, Wild Dog, Common Otter, Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan Black Bear, Rhesus Macaque, Jackal, Yellow Throated Martin, Common Langur and other many more wild species of Mammal. Birds like coots, great-crested grebe, black-necked grebe, red-crested pochard, mallard, common teal, merganser, and gulls can be been seen in the Rara National Park.

There are only 2 hotels in Rara Lake edge in the premises of National Park. In the season time, it will get busy and cannot accommodate more than 100 people in each hotel. So before you travel to Rara Lake, you are suggested to make a reservation early. You can take a boat ride in Rara Lake during your visit. Besides boating, you can explore the locality by taking a horse ride which can be rent locally. But the best way is to do on your feet in the morning and daytime.

How to Reach Rara Lake from Kathmandu?

By FLIGHT: The fastest way to reach Rara Lake is by Flight form Nepaljung to Mugu’s Talcha Airport. It only takes 2 hours to reach from Airport to Lake on Foot. Nepal Airlines and Tara Air operate a flight to this destination, however, there are not regular flights.

By Jeep: Jeep drive is another option to reach Rara Lake from your destination. Before booking jeep, make sure that your jeep has 4wheel option otherwise you will get stocked in the middle of nowhere. You need to drive through dangerous bumpy Karnali Highway so experience matters here. Your driving route will be Surkhet – Kalikot, Manma – Sinja Valley – Talcha Airport and Rara Lake. It takes approx 3 days to reach Rara Lake from Surkhet.

NOTE: Private vehicles are not allowed to take near the lake. So you need to park the vehicle on the way and hike for 1 hrs to reach the lake.
